are you my friend?

Or something like a friend? I’ve been thinking about this a lot, especially as I’ve started meeting people (for the first time) on Facebook (like this guy, whose hand I finally shook earlier this afternoon). Today Jeff Jarvis writes about the imprecise nature of the Facebook friend.

Why hasn’t Facebook fixed this yet?

In the comments of Jarvis’ post, a guy named “Troy” suggests three classes of friends will suffice. Personal friend, colleague and acquaintance. I like that.

Here’s more on this from “Troy,” Scott Karp and Meg Pickard (whose post sparked Jarvis to write his).
